Buffets were created by the devil! Not literally, but it sure does feel like it sometimes. I have a history with buffets. In high school I would go to the same buffet every week. It was a ritual that some of us “bi…

Stay Informed and Motivated with Health Magazines

Men’s Fitness MagazineWe all know getting into the workout groove is half the battle. Whether it’s from lack of motivation or not knowing where to begin, a health and fitness magazine subscription is a good way to stay on track and to keep you positive.

I like Men’s Fitness because it is a great source for fitness, diet, and health advice. Each issue has articles on exercise routines, nutritional plans, and weight loss. There is always at least one article on “how to lose 5 pounds in 2 weeks” or “how to lose 10 pounds by Easter.” They provide a day-to-day workout and diet breakdown with just enough scientific explanation for the average person to understand.

Many of my teen years included me reading a wide assortment of bodybuilding magazines. I learned a lot of information from them. Personally I changed the way I eat and workout from reading some of the articles. Some articles even tell you which foods to avoid, eat, and why. They’ll even throw in recipes for delicious healthy food.

I like to look for discounts when I order subscriptions. I usually buy them at the local Wal-Mart, but always think to myself that it’s cheaper to just subscribe yearly for the cost of a few magazines that you would buy individually. I came across a site is offering magazine subscriptions for a good discount. Discount Mags has a large library of health and fitness magazines, I already put in my order for Men’s Fitness, Muscle & Fitness, and Shape (for the misses).

It’s always good to add to your health knowledge arsenal. Which health magazines do you read or subscribe to?

The Fiji Bottled Water Taste Test

I finally decided to record a live taste testing of the much acclaimed Fiji bottled water brand. Before this water tasting, I have never tasted Fiji water. I still think that Fiji bottled water is extremely over priced. It’s all recorded for your viewing pleasure, plus my verdict. Watch the video below. Enjoy.

Help Spread the Health, Health Ranker Update

I just wanted to give an update on some of the latest happenings at Health Ranker, the social media/news health site I launched a few weeks back. Most of you may or may not know, but Health Ranker is not the first social media health news site, but it is shaping out to the best. I bet that you haven’t heard of any of the others. That’s because they SUCK! There aren’t many health news dedicated social media news and voting sites. So to be honest, I think Health Ranker is in a league of it’s own. Don’t get me wrong, it has a long way to go. But the amount of traffic, users, and all around positive feedback has been very encouraging to say the least. Thanks to those that have visited, used, submitted and written about the site. Although, I’m not going to lie, I’m a little disappointed with some folks that haven’t shown any love. I’m hoping they come around soon.

Aside from setting up partnerships with health related sites, I have been working on developing the site into not only a health bloggers resource, but a mainstream health news site as well. Speaking of which, if you are interested in setting up a partnership or cross promotion, or any thing for that matter, just shoot me an email using the contact form with your ideas and proposals. You will find that I am pretty much open to anything, so don’t hesitate to contact me. I have some ideas in the works for the site, but will most likely save those for another post. It’s too early to implement them anyway. I get ideas for my blog posts from the site, no more worrying about what to write about for me. ;)

There are some cool tools in place to help spread the health news love. Some include adding a Rank it! button to your site, adding a Health Ranker Widget to Your Site (displaying the top 5 health news submissions), and inviting friends. I made sure to make the Rank it! button slimmer and less intrusive than it’s original version. The top 5 widget is simply amazing! Once you place the code on your site, it uses the CSS of your site and fits right into place. You can see some examples using the link above, or just take a look to your right. I am using the widget code and didn’t need to modify anything. The friend invite tool is pretty cool too. It let’s you import your contacts and send them an invite to the site. And no, it doesn’t store any data or emails. It uses a temporary solution to send out the email invites, then erases it’s memory (so to speak).

Health Ranker ToolsThere have also been some social blog plugins that Health Ranker has been added to: Sociable Plugin by Joost de Valk and Socialmarker. I have been trying to get added to some other popular social bookmarking tools and will update you as it happens. Maybe with the help of some of you great readers, we can get added to even more tools. I won’t sit here and pretend to know all of the tools that exist, so if you know of any, please do let me know. Better yet, ask the specific tool developer to add Health Ranker to it.

I made this awesome banner with this awesome slogan, “Putting a Band-aid on Social Media.” What do you think? Some other slogans I plan on using include: “Help Spread the Health,” “Social Media Just Got Healthy,” and “No Health, No Glory!”

6 Steps for Losing Weight at a Convention

I recently attended a convention in Las Vegas, during which I picked up some ideas on how to continue on my weight loss journey. Here are 5 simple steps for losing weight at a convention:

1. Drink tons of water. They give out water bottles, so take them! Make sure to stay hydrated, but not so much that you drown your body. It is possible. So know when enough water is enough.

2. Network your but off. Walk around and meet as many people as you can. You will be astonished by how much walking you actually do as you network.

3. Book your hotel as far away from the event as possible. It’s important to note that I did not plan to do this, but I booked the flight and hotel too late and ended up having to stay 2 miles from the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. I figured it wouldn’t be a bad walk since there was a lot of sight seeing to do, but after a few minutes of lugging around a 20 lb backpack it got pretty tiring. I walked back and forth from my hotel to the Summit. That is 2 miles of walking each way, totaling 4 miles. Add that to the walking you do at the summit from networking and it’s a pretty good workout.

4. Do Burpees. What the heck are burpees? I learned what burpees were many years ago while in the military. I didn’t know they were referred to as burpees, but a couple of weeks ago Hoodworkout, a reader of Fat Man Unleashed, posted a video of with Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame performing burpees. I did these in the military and they kick your butt. There are several variations of the burrpee. For Example, in basic training they had us go down, perform a push up and alternate kicking our legs back and forth.

5. Wear layers. I wore 3 layers of clothing. I learned that it was always best to where layers, not matter what weather. It’s best to be able to shed layers, then it is to need to add layers. For the summit I wore my undershirt, my shirt, a sweater and then a vest or jacket. Can you say back sweat?

6. Go sightseeing. It’s a no brainer really, but if you are somewhere you have never been it’s a good idea to go sight seeing. Unless you are in some kind of dangerous ghetto or rain forest. Then I would advise you seek professional guides. But, otherwise just go walking and sight seeing, preferably during day light hours. Make sure to keep a map with you and remember your hotel name and address.

Well, that was my quick hitting 5 step list on how to lose weight while at a convention. Hope it helps.

A Benefit of Losing Weight: Fitting Into an Airplane Seat

Fat Ass On a Plane Taking Up Two SeatsI generally dislike traveling via airplane. Sitting in the same position for too long isn’t something I enjoy. I also don’t like uncomfortably sitting in a seat that’s made for someone half my size. I don’t know if it’s me, but are airplane seats shrinking? It seems like every time I take a new flight the seats and aisles are smaller and narrower.

I recently took a few flights and am happy to say that I actually fit comfortably into the seat of the airplanes I took. That was a major relief for me because I dread not fitting into airplane seats. I also dread sitting in the middle of a row, in between two people that can’t stand the “fat guy.” That always happens to me, it’s just my luck. Having lost some significant weight since my last plane ride has paid off big time. I can now fit into a seat, buckle my seat belt with out using an extender or pretend to have the seat belt buckled because I’m too embarrassed to ask for an extender.

This may or may not be true, but I have heard of obese people having to pay for two seats since they take up a lot of extra space. The airline companies would lose a customer if they allowed a fat person to only pay for one seat, but take up two. It has to be true since it makes sense. Also, airline companies have started to charge for EVERYTHING. I booked a flight and was charged a fee for selecting my own seat!!!! Then on the flight, they tried selling me $2 cheap earphones. They were also selling $8 ham and cheese sandwiches. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Don’t get me wrong, I may fit into a seat now but my shoulders and arms are still too wide for the narrow spacing of the seats. I still overflow into the other seats due to my abundance of width, but I don’t care that much about that. I’m just glad my butt doesn’t get numb anymore from being stuffed into a tiny space.

Bodyweight Workouts: No excuses

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Zac Tunstall of Hood Workout, a site with videos on how to perform bodyweight exercises in the comfort of your own surroundings.

All of us have body weight (many of us have more body weight than we want). This body weight is a perfect tool you can use to aid you in your workouts. I have heard more excuses than I would like to share from various people about why they do not exercise. There is no excuse. There are hundreds of exercises that you can do right now while reading this blog.

Pushups are a great place to start. If you cannot do a normal pushup begin by doing pushups from your knees. If you cannot do many reps of pushups, practice by doing them on your knees to improve endurance. Go ahead try to do a few now. Once you feel comfortable with pushups try doing advanced routine, triangle pushups, wide stance, clapping during the pushup, double clapping, one arm, handstand pushups, etc… There is a never ending supply of upper body workouts built into you.

Squats are a great lower body workout. Starting out, you can just do reps of your own body weight. Why not stand up and try to knock out 10-20 squats now? While you are standing go ahead and do a few calf raises to make yourself feel better and look better. If you generally squat 500 #’s try doing one legged squats with just your body weight, concentrate on your balance.

Why not combine the two exercises and do some burpees? To do a burpee, start in a pushup position, do the pushup, then quickly jump feet forward to a squatting position. From that position jump up (bring your knees into your chest and stretch your arms into the air). Drop back down into a squat, than jump your feet back and fall into the pushup position to start again.

Here are a few other suggestions of things you can do “right now” from your office or home. Tricep presses from your chair, arm circles, crunches, air bikes, situps, jack knifes, isometrics, aerobics, run, walk, jumping jacks, and many more… You can walk to a local park and do some pull-ups, dips, and other various bodyweight exercises.

You can do bodyweight workouts anywhere anytime. They take up very little space and can give a solid workout. They are used in the hood, street, prisons, and even in the corporate world. Gyms are great, the one thing they are not, is an excuse. After you have your doctors’ approval to begin working out or are deemed fit enough to start, there really is no reason why you are not working out. There really is no excuse to not begin working out and to continue your routine at all times.

Reward Yourself with a Cheat Day

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Jason of Trend Spike, a Men’s Blog and Online Magazine.

When Israel mentioned in his vlog that he believed people should replace food, rather than just cut it out of their diet altogether, I decided to give my opinion on that idea as well. I recently wrote an article on why you CAN go on a diet splurge every now and then. Although my idea was slightly different than what Israel had to say, I think Israel and I are both trying to get a point across.

That is, be realistic. Nobody is perfect, and trying to limit yourself to a hardcore diet that doesn’t allow for any mistakes, will likely work against you, rather than for you. You need to find something that works for YOU, not what supposedly works for your favorite spokes model. If you’re used to eating junk food for every meal, of every day, then dropping the food you love cold turkey, is just not the best option. Too many times, people have tried and failed with that approach. In fact, 75-90% of people who lose weight, regain it back. In my opinion, it’s because they choose a diet that they can’t live with. A healthy eating routine isn’t just about what you do for the next three weeks, it’s about what you do for the rest of your life (as Israel mentions in his video).

Personally, I’m in the same race to become fit, except I actually have a hard time gaining weight. When I was younger, I would always push myself to the extreme. Not eating right, or missing a workout even if only for a day, would cause me to feel guilty, as if I wasn’t trying hard enough. Sometimes this desire for perfection was exactly the attitude that brought me further away from my goals. Eventually I realized that it’s okay to live a healthy lifestyle, without trying to reach the finish line as fast as possible. It’s all about moderation. When I would allow myself to eat the things I wanted to every now and then, and when I would allow myself to miss a day in the gym, my progress continued uphill. I noticed that I wouldn’t get burned out every month, as I did when I was “hardcore.”

Giving yourself a free day every week as I suggest, or replacing junk food with healthy food (that you enjoy) as Israel suggests, will increase your chances of staying healthy for the long-term. Stop wasting your New Year’s resolution on the same thing every year. Give yourself a chance to win the battle this time. It’s not easy, but it doesn’t have to be hell either.

My Affiliate Summit West 2008 Weightloss Trek: Day 1

I got in to Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon and was extremely tired. I checked into my hotel and just ate some dinner before getting ready for Sunday’s Affiliate Summit. I went to bed early, had jet lag, on Saturday night.

Sunday morning was an adventure. I had to find a way to get to the Affiliate Summit at the Rio All-Suite Resort and Casino, which is about 2 miles from the hotel I am staying at. Being the warrior that I am, I wanted to walk the 2 miles, but it proved to be too much: I had a 15 lbs back pack on. What I did was take a shuttle halfway there, then trekked the rest of the way. It turned out to be a pretty good workout.

It wasn’t that bad a walk, I got there in about 15 minutes. Here are some shots of Vegas as I walked to the Rio:

After registration, I walked around until the Meet Market opened up. The Meet Market was a cool place to meet some affiliate managers for many of the programs that are available online. It was a cool place to meet new people. I met Zac Johnson for the first time, he was pretty cool. I also got a shoot with one of the Beauty and the Geek girls from a couple of seasons go.

Later that night I attended the Share A Sale Under the Stars Party at the Palms. It was an awesome venue and proved to be an awesome networking party. I didn’t have any drinks, I just had a few bottles of water. Here I finally got to meet of the folks that I read and see online. Some of them were:
Ian Fernando, Joe Tech, Roger, John Chow, and Mark of 45n5.

Here are some of the pictures from the party:

Monday morning has been great so far, I met Jim Kukral and Tristram Hussey. I am in the Press Bloghaus and then am heading over to the Un-Keynote. I am looking forward to the rest of the day. I plan on walking around and networking some more. What’s better than a workout and meeting new people?

Replacing Food When Dieting Vlog

It has been a busy week thus far and it’s only going to get busier. This week I launched Health Ranker, the new health 2.0, social media health site. It has been positively received so far and I can only see it getting better. In this weeks video blog I start off mentioning Health Ranker and ask for suggestions and feedback. I also mention my awesome new fat man t-shirts that came in the mail and ask for guest post submissions. I will be attending the Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas and will not have much time so any guests posts are welcome, just stick to health related topics.

The main focus of the vlog though is my health tip on replacing food when dieting and not just removing food. It’s all about dieting for the long haul. Hope you enjoy. Peace.

A Healthy Social Media Site: HealthRanker.com

Health Ranker Log, Healthy Social Media SiteHaving been health blogging for about 9 months now, I noticed that were was a huge void in the health news sector. Despite the multitude of social media news and voting sites available, there was not one dedicated to the health niche. I have become increasingly frustrated with the current “big dogs” in social media news sites, so I set upon making my own.

Enter HealthRanker.com. Health Ranker is a social media news and voting site that is dedicated to all things health. It silently launched a day ago and is already receiving positive feedback. The membership is increasing each day and so is the usage. You can sign up and submit health news in the various categories. You can also place our Rank it! button on your web site for others to Rank your health news.

HealthRanker ScreenshotSo if you are into health news, information and education, head on over and become a part of something fresh and new. Still in beta, there are some minor bugs but the site is fully functional. I would love for some more beta users so that we can tweak the system. Feedback and suggestions are always welcome.

It’s rare when we actually have the chance to be a part of something like this in the early stages, but I am extending the invitation to you now. See ya there, feel free to add me as a friend.

Fiji Water - The New Player in the Bottled Water Craze

Fiji Artesian Water bottled WaterEverywhere I go I see Fiji bottled water. What’s so great about it besides it being more expensive than other bottled water? I must admit that at first this was going to be a rant about how I can’t stand bottled water companies, but after reading through the beautifully designed Fiji Water web site and doing some deeper research, I had to change my tune. Well, I think I did. I was out to crush Fiji Water, but now have a better understanding of it.

Water is water. Right? When I think of things like this, I always think back to prehistoric days. I try and compare my daily habits with what cavemen might have done. I like to believe that cavemen would have just drank water from a stream. Simple. If it’s clear, it’s drinkable. But Fiji does a good job at educating it’s visitors. The site is full of information regarding the different water types of bottled water, health benefits of water, and why they think Fiji water is second to none.

Fiji says it uses water that has not touched open air. Ever! To understand this you first need to know what artesian water is. So what is artesian water? Simply put, it’s rain water that is sealed deep beneath layers of the Earth’s surface, hasn’t been exposed to the environment, and can only be brought to the surface by man. According to their site, the only time Fiji artesian water comes in contact with the air we breathe is when a person first opens a bottle that they have purchased. Pretty hard to believe right? I’m a skeptic. But this non-human contact is what they pride themselves in. It’s what they use as their main marketing point.

I haven’t tasted Fiji water, but I know many who have. They swear by it. Some stores around here (Florida) charge way too much for it. I can only imagine what cities in New York and California charge. You can also buy it in bulk from the Fiji Water web site. I bet you could do the same on eBay, but cheaper. I plan on buying a single bottle of Fiji Water this weekend and drinking it for the first time on camera for my weekly video blog. We will see if the water is what it’s hyped up to be. My reaction will say it all.

Fiji reminds me of the bottled water craze a few years back. I remember seeing Evian, Poland Spring and a slew of other bottled water companies emerging. All of the upscale folks would pay big bucks for a bottle of water, most of which has turned out to just be tap water re-bottled. Living in NYC, I have always been comfortable drinking water from the tap. NYC’s water is purified by one of the best water purification systems in the state of New York. It wasn’t until I moved to Florida that I had to start paying for drinking water. The tap water in Florida has no fluoride and contains a lot of chlorine. It tastes horrible. So we get water for our water dispenser from the local Sweet Bay Supermarket. My wife insists on buying bottled water for work. She isn’t too picky on which we get, but will refuse to drink Nestle or Zephyrhills brand water.

At the end of the day, water is water and I drink tons of it.

Do Weight Loss Competitions Really Work?

Fat ManMore often than not, weight loss competitions are successful. When ever I have participated in a weight loss challenge I have lost weight. This may not apply to everyone though. It takes determination and a desire to compete.

A great thing about weight loss competitions is that every one wins. There may be one overall biggest loser, but every participant usually loses some weight. If you follow the rules of the competition correctly and lose only one pound, then you are a winner in my book. So what makes weight loss competitions so successful? I think it has to do with the team/community and the competitive aspect that is fostered.

Having played sports I am accustomed to exercising with my fellow teammates. It took me years to break the habit of needing to work out alongside someone. After I stopped playing team sports I joined a gym so that I could workout with other people in the room. I have since then gotten used to working out alone, but it was very hard for me to build a consistent routine. It also helped that I got so fat and uncomfortable with my looks, that I did not want to workout in front of other people. I had to make a choice: either workout alone at home or go to a public gym and feel embarrassed. I chose to exercise at home and it has worked.

I am a big fan of having support in everything that you do in life. I wouldn’t have been able to lose the weight I have so far without this blog. This blog has helped me build a virtual support group. A community of individuals that are helping me along my weight loss journey. That’s why I think competitions are successful. They bring together a group of people with the same goal in mind. What better solution is there then to team up and tackle ones problems?

I was recently contacted by Tristan over at the Angie’s List to give some feedback on how communities can help with weight loss. We spoke for a bit and he added me to their List-en up! podcast. I think it covers a good topic and is worth a listen . Head on over and listen to it. There is also a transcript of the entire podcast for those that don’t/can’t tune into it or for the hearing impaired.

Exercising Sucks

Actually, exercising doesn’t suck. What sucks is when you’ve worked months and months on your dieting and have lost a lot of weight and then you add exercise to your program and start gaining it back.

However, no matter how much it sucks, don’t be discouraged. With the exercise your body has to make modifications because you’re burning more calories than you were before but haven’t eaten more food. The body gets worried that you’re trying to starve it. A couple of modifications that could help would be to add a few more calories to your diet or ignore the weight for a while as your body adjusts.

I’ve recently started an exercise program based on information that Israel here at Fat Man Unleashed provided me. I’m feeling the effects of it. My waist feels a little smaller. I’ve had more energy. My muscles are getting bigger. Every time I exercise it’s easier than the last time. However, I’ve gained weight. Not much, but a couple of pounds.

I’ve been told to ignore the scale for a while and although I have to weigh myself every day because my doctor wants me too, I’m going to start only paying attention to the weight about once a week. The other thing I do is if I’m between meals (I eat 5 a day) and I’m feeling hungry, I grab something very small with a few calories and munch on it. A good example would be a mini dark chocolate. Since dark chocolate is good for you in small doses, I’ll eat one or two of the mini ones which handles my sweet tooth, gives my body a few extra calories so it doesn’t get upset with me, and gives me the health
benefits of chocolate but without the bad stuff from eating too much of it.

There is nothing wrong with adding exercise to your diet program. Both are required for a healthy body. If you gain weight after you start exercising just take it as muscle gain and keep on going.

Late Night Vlogging

Time flies when you are busy and this past week was no exception. I can’t believe it’s already time for another vlog. This is the second video blog so far, so bear with me as I get better at this. I try to keep it realistic, even if it means appearing unorganized. Oh well, that’s vlogging for ya. This time around I talk about Nature Valley bars, answer a question regarding not updating my weight, mention Kimberly for analyzing my headache post, and finish off by giving props to Leo at ZenHabits.net.

It was late at night and my web cam isn’t the best ever. It’s a $40 Logitech Quickcam. The quality is pretty bad. But it gets the job done, for now. Maybe in a few months I will buy a better quality camera specifically for these videos. We can all dream can’t we? Enjoy!

Morning Routines

Blogging is definitely not the perfect ‘job’ when you are trying to watch your weight. My weight has gotten up to about a steady 215, but ideally 180 is my target. I’ve tried fasting, with the Master Cleanse Diet, however since then I’ve gained the weight back. I’ve also cut down drastically on soda and began drinking tons of water. However, it hasn’t been enough.

Morning Walks

The past few days I have started morning walks with my girlfriend and son (2 yrs old). Our method has been to get moving early (wake up earlier) and exercise.

We walk several blocks to the store and buy fruit each day. On the way home we all share it (or give little Matthew). It’s a way to get moving and to eat a healthy light breakfast. It doesn’t hurt to get the little guy up and moving as well.

Make it Work for You

Routine and consistency is the key for a workout like this. I have been trying to do everything else to be healthier, but walking and exercise was missing. I believe that it is my last key to begin losing weight again.

You have to make it work for you. We enjoy taking our son out for a walk. The healthy snack for breakfast is plus as well. Since I enjoy it, I am definitely more likely to continue this routine. It’s more an enjoying trip rather than a “workout”.

Not everyone has the luxury of doing this every morning. Be creative with physical activity. Maybe for lunch grab a quick filler and take a walk.

Most importantly, do what works best for you.

Mental Punishment: A Massive Headache

Yesterday I had a massive headache. What from? I am not sure. All I know is that I got home and had to lay down from the throbbing pain. I was thinking that it could be due to my minor relapse. I ate some chips yesterday. I know, shoot me. But at the time I was enjoying them and didn’t think much of it. Plus, it was only one bag.

It all started when I went for a quick walk and stumbled upon 7 Eleven. Like a bug being drawn to a light bulb, I found myself entering the store and heading for the junk food aisle. Next thing you know I was paying for a bag of Lays barbecue flavored chips. My favorites.  I washed it down with a lot of water and figured it wasn’t that bad since I hadn’t treated myself for a while.

Then the headache began. It was approximately 2 hours after I ate the bag of chips. Weird. Is it mental? Am I punishing myself for eating that bag of chips by giving myself a headache? I think that may be the case. I don’t usually get headaches like that unless I eat some really crappy junk food. Maybe it’s my body’s chemical reaction to the unhealthy ingredients in the chips?

I’m not sure, but I do know that the headache was so unbearable that I had to lay down and close my eyes. Does any one have any idea as to why I got such a bad headache after eating the bag of chips? Has this happened to you before?

Springtime Detoxification

Although the grey days of late-winter seem to be endless, Spring is approaching very fast. In no time we will switch from knitted sweaters and stuffed jackets to easy-breezy skirts and tight shorts.

So what is your reaction when you realize that your favorite pairs of cotton pants don’t fit you any more? Of course your first reaction is panic and depression. But as most of the times, nature comes to your aid only if you are willing to accept her help.

The markets are filled with fruits and vegetables so all you have to do is commit yourself to a natural detoxicating diet. This will help you loose those few pounds of overweight or just give you a boost of energy by cleansing your body of toxins. This extra energy will also help your immune system fight back those nasty viruses of flue that wake up with the thaw of winter.

Plus a fruits and veggies diet aids natural weight loss and if done in a balanced way it will not have any negative side effects like many chemical dietary supplements or diet pills do.

Fruits and vegetables contain lots of vitamins and minerals but you will have to pay attention to consume enough proteins and salt as well. So it is not about starvation, or thirst. Actually the diet is not going to do you any good if you don’t drink enough liquids.

Another useful tip might be to serve your salad in blue colored dishes as this color is proven to diminish your appetite.

If you are having lunch at your workplace, make yourself a light salad of veggies and add some tuna or steamed chicken-breast to make it more satisfying.

If you get hungry between meals, munch on an apple, carrot, a few nuts, and some dried or frozen fruits instead of having bakery goods which fill you up but don’t keep you running for too long.

Fat Man Unleashed dot com

PhenForum is an information website and discussion forum revolving around the revolutionary weight loss product Phentermine. You may never have heard of Phentermine and are wondering what it is, right?

What is Phentramin and How Does it Work?

Phentramin is the most popular, all natural diet pill on the internet market today. It is a one-a-day pill that is to be taken one hour before a meal (preferably morning because it does have a tendency to upset sleep). The pill works by decreasing your appetite and craving for food you don’t need throughout the day (such as the snack at noon or midnight).

This is too Good to be True. Are there Side Effects?

Talk to your physician before starting a daily regimen of Phentramin or any weight loss product.

While your body is adjusting to the amazing effects that Phentramin causes, you may experience upset stomach, sleepiness, irritability, dry mouth, and/or constipation. Phenforum recommends that if any of these side effects become long term that you consult with a physician immediately.

Do They Have Success Stories?

  • Yes, Phenforum has a whole page devoted to explaining weight loss success stories using Phentramin.

Are There Reviews of the Diet Pills Made Public?

Is Selling this Pill All PhenForum Offers?

  • No, Phenforum is not just a business that sells Phentramin. It’s a community and resource center. They give you a full history, overview, faqs, dosage, even pictures of pills. And because Phentermine is outlawed for sale by the U.S. Government, they give you plenty of alternative choices (more than just Phentramin).

So Does Phenforum Just Want Me to Buy Their Drug?

  • No, they want to help you become an overall healthy person. They offer an online forum to help you connect with other Phentramin users to share experiences, diets, and fitness routines. Phenforum even offers helpful workout videos to visually guide you to a better body.

Do You Vlog? My First Video Blog

Vlogging, or posting a video blog, is something I have been wanting to do for quite some time. I can now say that I finally did it. I sat down after a quick workout and recorded my very first vlog. It was spontaneous and fun to do. I plan on sticking to a weekly vlog, that I will then embed on the sidebar. Most of the vlogs will be off the top of my head and very short (about 5 minutes or so). In this weeks video you find me breathing heavy after a workout and discussing my intentions with the weekly videos, giving thanks to my readers, mentioning my new fat man shirt contest, and talking about some other random things.

Hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions you would like answered let me know and I will cover it on the next video. Be Safe.

Giants Beat Patriots in Super Bowl XLII

The New York Giants will Beat The New England Patriots in the Super Bowl!

That’s right. I said it. I BELIEVE it! The Giants will beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, it won’t be by a field goal either. For those of you who are mocking me right now, just wait until Sunday night when Eli is hoisting the trophy alongside Plaxico Burress, Michael Strahan, Amani Toomer and the other Giants. This will be a disappointing season for Tom Brady and his band of undefeated men. Too bad. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

So why do I think the Giants will win? First off, I know they will win. Just think back to the last game of the regular season when the Giants faced the Patriots. My bud said the Giants were Patriot killers, but they fell a bit short. Not by too much, they almost pulled it out. But beyond that, they gained a huge sense of confidence. Everyone (except me) said that the Patriots were going to demolish the Giants in that game. Sorry, didn’t happen. Instead they opened Pandora’s box. Little did the Pats know that in winning that game they sealed their inevitable fate: Losing the Super Bowl and going 18-1. Thus going down as the biggest chokers in NFL history.

Still don’t think they will win? Did you think the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were going to beat the Giants? Ha! I knew Jeff Garcia was going to throw an interception. The guy tries too hard. Bucs choked. Okay, I bet you were one of the folks that said the Dallas Cowboys, led by Tony “Oh No!” Romo, were going to crush the Giants. Am I right? I know you thought that, but I told everyone I know that I don’t believe in Romo. I knew he would throw an INT as well. He is another try-too-hard kinda guy, with his “elusiveness.” Didn’t work either. Oh, I know! You finally thought that the Green Bay Packer cheese heads would win, at home in the cold, and send the Giants packing. HA! I called that one too (those of you out there know I called it). I knew that Brett Favre would try and perform one of his patented “get away from the sack” plays only to throw an interception. Then, he did. Effectively giving up at the end of the game. Who cares if he is coming back next season, the guy needs to retire and head to his Wrangler jeans farm.

Did you notice the pattern? All of those teams won their Divisions. So have the Patriots. I have had faith in the Giants all year and while Eli Manning has let me down in the past, he won’t this time. Eli has enough skills to win the Super Bowl MVP. He has the hottest team in the NFL for the past 6 weeks, a two-headed (sometimes 3) monster running game, a deep threat sure-handed receiver in Burress, and a defense that can come through in clutch moments.

I haven’t even spoken about the level of play from the two teams over the last few weeks. The Patriots have gone from super-duper play to average play. The Giants have gone from below-average play to game changing, do what it takes to win, above average play. You know what? I rest my case. We will see my prediction come true on Sunday.

Folks, get ready for one of the saddest days in Boston, Massachusetts history.

The Giants are coming and they ain’t taking no prisoners!

The Reality of Weight Lost

The Reality of Weight Lost and LossLosing weight is not an easy thing to do, unless you get some sort of disease. But then that wouldn’t be healthy. Isn’t the whole point of losing weight to eventually be healthy? It is for me at least. The sooner you realize that losing weight is going to be hard, the better off you will be with your weight lost goal.

I see time and time again, people wanting to lose 50 lbs in a month, or 10 lbs in a week. That’s just not realistic. While it can be done and has been done by many, even more have failed at it. The best way to approach losing weight is to look at it like a reward to your healthy living choices. Instead of having a ridiculous goal of losing 8 lbs in a week, why not just have the goal of eating 4 healthy meals a week and incorporating 3 sessions of physical activity. That way , whatever weight you lost will just be a benefit from your newly adapted healthy choices.

Or, take for example last night. I decided to go for a run before plopping down to watch the hyped up, long over do season premier of Lost on ABC. More on that some other time. So I am out running, it’s dark, cold, and scary. The path I took is near a few lakes and in Florida you never know if a gator or a water moccasin is going to attack you. The first few minutes felt good, keep in mind I haven’t run for a few weeks since I have been biking instead. I felt a little soreness as I continued running. Once I reached the halfway point, I stopped and walked for 3 or 4 minutes. I was contemplating walking back the whole way, but that would have taken way too long. So I mustered up the strength and jogged back home in pain. Not real pain, just fighting through the desire to stop sorta pain. What did I do? Instead of looking at the long road in front of me, I focused my sight on getting through the first 4 feet in front of me. Step by step. Next thing you know, I was home.

Don’t get me wrong, making these new healthy choices is hard itself. Sticking to them is even harder. My point is that if you make smaller goals and accomplish those, then the overall picture will be easier to accomplish.

Baby steps people. Baby Steps.

Pushing Around a 5500 lb. Car

Car pushing can help build muscle and strength in ways you never would have imagined. I first came across car pushing and pulling while watching The World’s Strongest Man competition on ESPN as a kid. It can help train your body in ways that conventional weights, exercises, and machines can’t. It’s also a great total body cardio workout.

I have been wanting to test my strength by pushing a car for quite some time. So I finally decided to bite the bullet and head to the park. I managed to convince a nice guy at the park to let me push his 2004 Ford Expedition around the lot for a few minutes. The total curb weight for that size truck is 5499 lbs. Add to that the 173 lbs. that the guy weighed and the extra stuff I saw in the trunk of the SUV and we are looking at well over 5600 lbs. Oh, and I have it all on camera.

I wasn’t at all intimidated by the size of the truck, I knew I could push it. I just didn’t want to look like a fool pushing around a car. My car pushing skills are limited to the many times I have had to get out and push a stalled car from the middle of the road or a car stuck in the snow during the winter in NYC. That hasn’t happened for a few years, so I am rusty. I didn’t bother stretching, instead I mentally prepared myself for the task. Small words of encouragement and picturing myself push the car around helped to psyche me up.

As you will see in the video, it wasn’t that hard to start off. I found it rather easy pushing the truck from the back, but pushing from the front was really difficult. The engine weight maybe? I estimate that I pushed for anywhere from 50 to 80 yards. Either way, it was a great experience. After that last push I ended up with that burning sensation in my throat. You know, the feeling you get when you train real hard and your heart and chest start pumping. I usually get that feeling when I run fast, but 2 or 3 minutes of car pushing and I was feeling it bad! My technique may be off, but then again I was just doing this to say I could do it. Next time, I will look into car pushing techniques. I tried pushing with my legs and upper body, then just my legs, then just my upper body. It all felt the same.

Here’s the video:

Exercise Your Way to Better Blogging

Tennis Racket and Tennis Ball PictureIt seems to me that you can hardly go one day without hearing health related news. There are new miracle pills developed on a seemingly daily basis, medical reports are published frequently debunking some previous health myth, and it seems as though half of all TV commercials deal with some aspect of health. There’s no way around it; health is important and it’s everywhere!

I lead a pretty busy life – there’s grad school, there’s my wife, then there’s my job. Oh yeah, and don’t forget about my side businesses online like my blog and other e-business websites. My days are packed tight and my schedule is full from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed. After examining my lifestyle and my schedule, I’ve often tried to streamline my life so that I’m not doing anything that is not productive. I’ve tried to replace the junk with the more fruitful things in life but no matter how I tried and no matter how I rearranged my schedule I always managed to leave in time for exercise. Be it going to the gym in the winter or going for a run/jog/walk when it’s nice outside, exercise is the key to help me keep a good mental attitude and physical condition. If the saying “you are what you eat is true, I find that “you are what you do is just as relevant.

Regardless of how my day is going, I always feel a little better after exercising. After working out, I feel better about myself, my situations, and know that I’ve made progress with whatever is on my mind because I have just spent time passively and actively thinking about whatever that may be. Exercise is a great stress reliever, self-esteem builder, and motivator. Whenever I work out, I always work better and write better afterwards. I work more efficiently, my blog posts are better and more articulate, and my school work gets done more efficiently.

The list below represents my top 5 reasons to work out and exercise regularly. Not only do these reasons motivate me, but they give me a much needed break from life and provide me with some “alone time to think about and organize the rest of my tasks.

  1. Exercise improves my mood. After a busy day of work and classes, when I go to the gym for a workout I feel my mood change for the better. By the time I’m done, I have more energy and motivation to do whatever else needs to be done that day.
  2. Exercise helps me to organize the rest of my tasks. Regardless of where I exercise, I’m able to think about the tasks that I need to get done the rest of the day. A hectic schedule sometimes doesn’t afford me time to think, so exercise is my thought outlet.
  3. Exercise relieves stress. After a particularly challenging day, I look forward to going to the gym for a nice work out. Lifting weights and jogging on the treadmill help me to relieve the stresses of the day and I leave the gym feeling like a new person.
  4. Exercise helps me sleep better. This cannot be understated or under rated. Sleeping well is key to feeling good the next day. Waking up after a good night’s sleep is a great feeling and exercising can help you achieve that kind of sleep regularly!
  5. Exercise is fun! I know this is cliché, but exercise IS fun!I like exercising. It’s fun and I enjoy it quite a bit. I think you can find enjoyment out of exercise too, especially after looking at how much your habits and productivity has changed after working out for a while. Group exercise classes and other social aspects of a gym can be quite entertaining. You can have fun while working out!

Balance is the key to life. No matter if you work 3 jobs or are retired, there must be balance in your life. I find that exercise is a great equalizer in my life and helps me to balance out my thoughts, stresses, and plans. If you already exercise, keep it up! If you don’t exercise regularly, I dare you to find a gym and start going. You’ll thank me for it later.

How Many Sets Should You Do Per Exercise?

This article was submitted by Mehdi, author of the strength training blog StrongLifts.com

Israel invited me to make a post about how many sets you should do per exercise. For a lot of people going to the gym, the amount of sets you should remains unclear. This post will help you out.

Benefits of Sets.
What is the purpose of a set anyway? What is it good for?

  • Improved Technique. The more sets you do, the more you can practice your technique. If you’re new to weight lifting, 5 sets leads to technical proficiency faster than 3 sets.
  • Increased Stress. If you Squat 60kg for 3 sets of 5 reps, you have lifted 900kg. 5 sets of 5 reps with 60kg amounts for 1500kg volume. Volume stresses your body: it forces it to build muscle & strength.

The Problem with Sets.
Your body needs to recover from all that stress. You can’t do high amounts of sets for a long time without overtraining. Some symptoms you might experience:

  • Lack of motivation
  • Strength loss
  • Problems sleeping
  • Injuries

How Many Sets Should You Do?
Best is to shoot for 15 to 25 reps per exercise depending on how many reps you do. Your warm-up sets don’t count. Examples:

  • 3 sets of 5 reps. Build strength, power & myofibrillar hypertrophy.
  • 5 sets of 5 reps. Same as 3 x 5, but more stress & technical work.
  • 3 sets of 8 reps. Less strength, more sarcoplasmic hypertrophy.
  • 2 sets of 12 reps. More endurance & sarcoplasmic hypertrophy.

All rep ranges build muscle, strength & endurance. But some do it better than others. Start light, learn to do your exercises correctly & add weight each workout.

Unless you understand how sets & reps affect your body and thus the results you’re getting, stick to a routine proven to work. If you don’t know which one, check out StrongLifts 5×5. It takes 3×30mins per week.

This article was submitted by Mehdi, author of StrongLifts.com. Check out his blog for more tips on how to Deadlift, Bench Press, Overhead Press, gain weight & lose fat.

Eating to Lose Weight

That’s right. You heard me say it: eating to lose weight. I’ll say it one more time to let it sink in: eating to lose weight.

Now why in the world would someone eat to lose weight? Well, here’s the secret: It’s not the amount of food really, but the number of times. Let’s look over a couple of myths so I can explain it to you a little better:

1. “You have to eat less to lose weight.” If you’re downing a gallon of milk with a bag of cookies, then yeah, it’s time to cut back some. However, if you’re eating sensibly and not losing weight if you’re overweight, then it’s probably when and how often. Your stomach is like a log fire. Keep logs on it and it keeps burning (calories), but if you let it go out, it takes forever to get it going again. So you need to eat smaller meals but more often in the day, like 5 or 6 times. What’s good is 3 regular meals and 2 to 3 snacks. If you drink plenty of water with each meal and spread them out, then you’ll feel full most of the day and your metabolism will run like crazy, burning the heck out of calories. Snacks should be slightly smaller than meals.

2. “You have to eat vegetables or food that tastes bad to lose weight.” Veggies are good for you, sure. But they are not a necessity to losing weight. I eat pizza once a week. I also have hamburgers and fries. And I’ve lost over 70 pounds so far from diet alone. If you don’t get enough vegetables, then hopefully you’re at least taking a decent multivitamin. The main thing to remember is to not go nuts. Limit your portions. Don’t eat an entire medium pizza. Eat a personal size pizza or 1 or 2 slices of the medium instead. The cool thing is you get to do it again in about 2 hours.

Eating food makes the body burn calories. Eating too much food makes it store fat. However, eating small amounts throughout the day keeps it burning calories even when you’re sleeping. When I first started my diet, I’d go to bed and wake up 5 pounds lighter. Sure, I weighed 355 pounds so that much came off easily, but it was purely by diet changes. Don’t let your “log fire” burn out and you’ll be shedding pounds fast without very much work at all. When that stops working, then you will need the exercise to lose weight. But you’ll be in better shape and able to handle the exercise easier.

The Ultimate Laptop Workout

So you make money with your laptop, right? Cool, the handy slim, rectangular circuit box puts bread on the table. It also keeps you in contact with love ones, that’s an enriching component to its repertoire. It may even get you laid, thank God for Craig’s List…you know what I’m talking about horn dogs. But does your prissy laptop make you sweat and improve your heart’s health? Does it give your muscles a burn? If not it’s because you’re not utilizing it right.

The average laptop weighs about 7 pounds, some of the larger HP entertainment versions can tip the scales at around 12 pounds. This weight combined with the normal tension you will feel from not wanting to drop your holy money maker, doohickey will create an awesome workout apparatus.

So first and foremost unplug your laptops geniuses, we don’t want any accidents.

  1. Stand with your laptop in your hands perpendicular to the floor. Extend your arms out and twist to the right hold it, bring it back to the center pause and then hit the left and hold it, get a good stretch. Concentrate and take these slow. Do 20 reps. Next keep the laptop in the same position but now press it against your belly. Perform the same twist but now add a squat when you arrive at center, perform 20 reps. Following that resume the extended position with the laptop and perform 15 more twisting squats.
  2. Next hit the floor, do not let the laptop hit floor! Lay down on the floor and hold the laptop in your hands with your palms facing each other. Press your laptop for 55 reps. Feel the burn your laptop can inflict!
  3. Now get a pillow. No you’re not going to take your laptop- human relationship to the “next level you freak. Set the pillow on the floor above your head, it will serve as a cushion so you don’t bang up the precious laptop. Your starting position is at your belly button and simply stretch with the laptop with your arms extended and reach backwards tapping the pillow. Perform this movement for 30 reps and then immediately do 15 reps but when you reach your chest perform 5 rapid presses.
  4. The next move requires you to sit, so get comfy. Simply take your laptop above your head with arms fully extended and then lower the laptop behind your neck and bring back up to the start position. Perform 100 reps. After that press the laptop off your chest for 35 reps.
  5. Now that you have bonded with the laptop and have earned the trust of the television, keyboard thingy take it to the next level. Perform lunges with the laptop pressed against your chest. Do these lunges slowly and carefully with focus to create optimal tension. Perform 20 laptop lunges for each leg.

Hope you enjoyed the workout, take care to all, and get active no matter what!
